Keeping COVID Out and Joy In
Given the pandemic, keeping our surroundings clean has become a matter of life and death. COVID-19 has brought with it another sickness, one that since the dawn of man and panda, we have not found a vaccine for and it is excessive fear. If it’s not the fear, it’s the sickness or both which we notice infect good people. We pandas are a friend of humanity and we don’t like them stressing out. We deployed our nerdiest panda to research and compile some tips which can help human and panda-kind protect their loved ones at home from both the disease and the reason to fear. Together, we take back the joy in our homes!
Understand What We’re Dealing With
COVID is a bad uninvited stranger who wants to break into your home. This stranger does not have legs. It relies on its environment and its hosts to spread it. Here is a summary of the known ways it travels according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Person-to-person Contact
- The virus is believed to spread mostly between people.
- People within about 6 feet of each other
- Respiratory droplets from an infected person coughing, sneezing or talking
- These droplets when inhaled enter our bodies
- It can spread through people not showing symptoms
- It spreads very easily and sustainably between people, not as efficient as measles but more than influenza.
Other Methods of Spread
- It may be possible that touching objects that have the virus then touching your mouth, nose, or possibly eyes can make you catch it. This is still being researched.
- It also appears that the virus can spread from people to animals. According to the article, there were cases where infected people passed on the virus to their pets.
General Steps to Protect Ourselves and Others
- Maintain social distancing (about 6 feet)
- Wash your hands with soap and water. If these are unavailable, a hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol.
- Covering the mouth or nose with a cloth or mask when around others
- Having a routine of cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces
Cleaning vs Disinfecting?
The descriptions below were borrowed from our research resources. These will be posted at the bottom of this article.
- Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. It does not kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.
- Disinfecting refers to using chemicals, for example, approved disinfectants, to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.
A Process on Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Home
- Thoroughly clean the surfaces with soap and water. Clean all surfaces which are frequently touched for example countertops, the fridge handle, doorknobs, etc. Using disposable gloves is an effective way to prevent contamination. If reusable gloves are preferred, these should only be used for cleaning and should be cleaned and disinfected themselves after use. Your hands should also be washed after removing the gloves.
- After the surfaces have been cleaned and air-dried, use an approved cleaning agent Use a cleaner that has at least 70% alcohol solution. Bleach and hydrogen peroxide can also be used.
- Always be informed of the suitability of the products you use. Read labels and research! Don’t trust unfounded claims on cleaning agents and remedies. Some random aunt’s opinion of a vinegar mixture combined with some other ingredients should not be given your trust. Some random uncle’s belief that gargling whiskey kills the virus is another example to be wary of.
Other Useful Tips
- For your dishes, if you have a dishwasher, use it. High temperatures help in killing dangerous microbes in your plates and bowls.
- Educate your employees, domestic help, and drivers on the virus. Provide them with masks, sanitizers, and other means to protect themselves. Stress the importance of cleanliness and maintaining good social distance with other people.
- While cleaning, wear skin protection, and consider eye protection for potential splash hazards.
- Label diluted cleaning solutions to prevent confusion of mistaking the chemicals with something else.
- Take extra care when handling cleaning chemicals. Follow the instructions.
- Keep chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.
